YCMTU: Joel Osteen, Pork, & Shrimp

In a previous post, I talked about the “YCMTU” file that I keep in my office, which stands for “You Can’t Make This Up.”  Unfortunately, You Tube Videos don’t store well in a filing cabinet, so I’ll have to document this one the web instead.  No detailed commentary needed, just watch it for yourself.  But remember, this guy is the hottest thing in American Christianity right now!  Something tells me that Joel Osteen never read the pastoral epistles (1-2 Timothy, Titus), or at least not very carefully.  Come to think of it, what he really needs to read is Galatians!  Maybe you should before jumping on the Osteen bandwagon!

Additions on 3/2/2009: [1] Thanks to Issues, Etc. host Pastor Todd Wilken for picking this post as his “Blog of the Week” on Friday, February 27, 2009.  Here is an audio link for the “Blog of the Week” segment.  [2] In honor of Osteen’s sermon, my family went out to a great local seafood restaurant on Friday night, and I ate exactly what Osteen told us not to eat.  Consider it my attempt to stand firm in my Christian freedom and not let myself be burdened again by a yoke of slavery (cf. Galatians 5:1)!  🙂

  1. Brother, it was not Mr. Osteen that told you not to eat what was was G-d and His ETERNAL Word. So my friend, you did not offend Joel by going out and eating “exactly what Osteen told you not to eat”, you went out and ate an unclean feast that broke the heart of your Father and Creator.

You need to read Galatians again..this time, remember that he is not speaking to JEWS, but rather Gentiles. What “laws” were the Gentiles under? They were under their pagan laws and doctrines. They were honoring their pagan holy days, not those of G-D’s holy days.

Not only have you spit in the face of G-d by breaking His Torah, you have also spat in the face of our Savior by your back bitting words. I am deeply sad by brothers like yourself. You esteem yourself now…but what is going to happen to you on the day of judgement? Remember…”Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Mat 5:19

  2. 1. He’s right on the science, but wrong on the theology.

    2. What purpose do dietary restrictions have in a church? And most importantly, why is he shackling people to the law?

    3. The Old Testament law was at best a shadow of things to come, and at worst, a mirror to show you precisely how bad you were because you could not keep it all!

    4. Let’s not call unclean that which the Lord has made clean. (Acts chapter 10)

  3. Osteen is nauseating. Heard him a few times, and I can’t figure out why he’s so popular. Shows us that many folks have “itching ears”, and want a bunch of laws and trite tips on how to live “their best life now”, with Jesus as a last sentence “throw in”. Don’t like to judge someone simply on their style and vocal accent, but the syrupy sweet Texas twang is really hard to swallow. At least Mark Jeske can’t do a very good drawl (although I want him back in his pulpit, and back in his robes, for “Time of Grace.” We’ve got enough Charles Stanley look alikes on “Christian TV”!)
